For the characterization of archaeological artifacts, scientific imaging is proving to be an increasingly important method, allowing for virtual excavations of urns or cinerary amphorae, for example. Based on X-ray imaging, CT scan or radiography will reveal the internal structures of archaeological furniture, in the laboratory or in situ.

In addition to X-ray radiography, our laboratories have a CT scan for computed tomography examinations.
Whether in two dimensions for X-ray or in 3D for CT scan, CIRAM’s scientific imaging techniques will reveal the contents of sealed pottery or the shape of metal objects trapped in their gangue
Scientific HD imaging in the lab or on site
Examination of closed forms or archaeological artifacts caught in sediment gangues increasingly requires non-destructive investigations. By coupling in situ x-ray radiography and 3D CT scan in the laboratory, a complete coverage of archaeological furniture is obtained.
HD imaging techniques will reveal the internal structure of objects, the density homogeneity of materials, the presence of cracks or fractures, the degree of conservation, or the degree of corrosion.
X-ray radiography directly on site
Digital and portable X-ray is possible thanks to the latest generation of equipment. With the help of a high-power generator and a digital acquisition system, CIRAM can carry out an intervention directly on site and obtain the images in real time.
Instant X-ray radiography allows to adapt in real time the analysis and the angles of view to obtain optimal results and images. This method is made possible by state-of-the-art transportable equipment.
CT scan for 3D visualization
Computed tomography allows objects and their internal structures to be visualized in three dimensions, without using a destructive method. This technique also allows for a better understanding of manufacturing methods, identifying the degree of conservation or corrosion of materials.
The CT scan will also allow for virtual excavations. CIRAM teams can also enhance material contrasts and work in false colors, to optimize the rendering and visualization of the artifacts present. Finally, the virtual excavations can be presented in video format to add the dimension of time to the 3D visualization.
